Make Up and Sunscreen Protection

Skin care professionals get asked this grueling question all the time: “Do I need to wear sunscreen if my makeup has SPF in it?” While cosmetic companies have attempted to include SPF in their products, the reality is that most are not formulated with enough sunscreen properties to provide patients with adequate coverage. So, the short answer is, yes, you do in fact need to use a sunscreen in addition to your makeup with SPF.

When shopping for sunscreen, look for the words “broad-spectrum.” This means there are ingredients in the sunscreen that are protecting you from both UVA and UVB rays. (UVA is associated with skin aging; UVB is associated with skin burning). The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a sunscreen of at least SPF 30.

Oh, one more thing. You need to wear sunscreen every single day. It doesn’t matter if you’re going to be indoors all day-you will still be exposed to the sun. “Hi, windows!” Reduce the risk of skin cancer and slow down the signs of aging by using a sunscreen you actually like.
